How to create, secure and recover a Threads account
Threads is easy to start with and easy to lose if you skip the basics. This guide walks through creating and setting up a Threads account, securing it properly, and what to do when you have login problems, a suspended account or need to recover access.
How to create a Threads account
- Install Threads from the App Store or Google Play, or open threads.net.
- Tap Log in with Instagram. Threads accounts are linked to an Instagram account, so you sign in with your Instagram username and password (create an Instagram account first if you don't have one).
- Import your bio, link and profile photo from Instagram, or write new ones.
- Choose a public or private profile.
- Pick accounts to follow and tap Join Threads.
How to set up a Threads profile that works
- Clear name and photo. Use the same branding as your other channels.
- A bio that says what you post. One line on the topic, one on who it is for.
- A link to your site or shop.
- Pinned post introducing the account.
- Public profile if you want reach; private if it is personal.
How to secure a Threads account
Because Threads uses your Instagram login, securing Threads means securing the linked account in Meta's Accounts Center.
- Change the password. Threads: Settings > Account > Accounts Center > Password and security > Change password. Use a long, unique password.
- Turn on two-factor authentication. In Password and security > Two-factor authentication, choose an authentication app (safer than SMS) and save the backup codes.
- Check your contact details. In Accounts Center > Personal details, make sure the email and phone are yours.
- Review logins. Password and security > Where you're logged in. Log out of devices you don't recognise.
- Turn on login alerts so you're told about new sign-ins.
- Privacy settings. Settings > Privacy lets you limit mentions, hide replies with certain words, and restrict or block accounts.
If you bought or were handed a Threads account
Do all the steps above in your first session, from one device on a stable connection. Change the password, replace recovery email and phone, turn on 2FA. Then use the account normally for a few days before posting heavily. Our general guide on logging in to bought accounts safely explains why gradual activity matters.
Threads login problems: quick fixes
- "Incorrect password". Threads uses the Instagram password. Reset it from the Instagram login screen.
- Stuck on a security check. Complete the code by email or SMS; if the code doesn't arrive see our Instagram phone verification guide.
- App crashes or loops. Update the app, clear cache (Android) or reinstall, then try threads.net.
- "We suspended your account". See below.
Threads account suspended: what to do
Suspensions on Threads usually follow the linked Instagram account. You will normally see an option to disagree with the decision; tap it and follow the steps, which can include confirming your identity. Answer honestly and only once; repeated appeals don't help. While you wait, review Meta's Community Guidelines: the common causes are spam-like behaviour (mass follows, repeated links, identical replies), impersonation, or a login that looks like a takeover.
How to recover a Threads account
- If you forgot the password, reset it from the Instagram login screen with "Forgot password?".
- If someone else changed the details, go to instagram.com/hacked on a browser and follow the recovery flow. You may be asked for a selfie video or a code to your original email.
- Check the email inbox linked to the account for a message from Meta about an email change. It often includes a "secure your account" link that reverts the change.
- Once back in, do every step in the security section above.
How to grow a Threads account (without risking it)
- Post consistently. A few useful posts a day beat bursts of twenty.
- Reply to others in your niche; conversations drive discovery on Threads.
- Use topic tags where relevant.
- Avoid automation that mass-follows or mass-replies; that is the fastest route to restrictions.
- For local audiences, write in their language. Accounts with matching country history help here; see Threads accounts by country.
Threads for business
Brands use Threads for announcements, support conversations and community. Keep one owner account with 2FA, share access through Meta's tools rather than sharing passwords, and keep separate accounts per market if you target different countries. Need extra accounts? See Threads accounts or the mixed-country Threads PVA accounts pack.
Threads account security tips (summary)
- Use an authenticator app for 2FA and keep backup codes offline.
- Never enter your password on sites that promise "free followers" or "verification badges".
- Be suspicious of DMs or emails claiming your account will be deleted; Meta's real messages appear in Accounts Center under "Emails from Meta".
- Remove third-party apps you no longer use from the linked Instagram account.
- Check "Where you're logged in" once a month.
