Threads accounts by country: how location works on Threads

Threads is available in more than 100 countries, but the app has no "country" box you can tick. So how does Threads decide where an account is from, can you change it, and what does a "Threads account by country" actually give you? This guide answers those questions in plain language.

Is Threads available in my country?

Threads launched in July 2023 in over 100 countries and arrived in the European Union in December 2023. Today it is available in most of the world, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, the EU, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, Indonesia and the rest of South-East Asia. If the app does not appear in your App Store or Google Play, your store region may be set to a country where it is not offered; the web version at threads.net is another option.

How Threads works out an account's location

Threads profiles are linked to Instagram, so the location signals come from Meta's account systems as a whole. There is no single setting. Instead Meta looks at signals such as:

  • the IP address the account was created on and is used from,
  • the country code of the phone number used to verify it,
  • the device's language and region settings,
  • the app store region,
  • who the account follows and interacts with.

These signals affect which posts are suggested to you, which audiences see your posts first, and which country is shown in the "About this profile" information Meta displays for some accounts.

Threads account country settings: what you can change

Under Settings in Threads you can change language, privacy, notifications and who can mention or reply to you. You will not find a country selector. A few related settings you can control:

  • Language: Settings > Account > Language (or your phone's language). This changes the interface, not the account's country.
  • Private or public profile: Settings > Privacy.
  • Location in posts: where supported, you can add a place to an individual post.

How to change the country on Threads

Because location is inferred, it changes gradually as the signals change. If you move to a new country, the account will slowly adapt as you use it there with a local connection and, ideally, a local phone number. A few practical tips:

  • Change one thing at a time. Switching IP, phone and device all at once looks like an account takeover and can trigger a security check.
  • Follow local accounts and topics. Interactions are a strong signal for what your feed shows.
  • Post in the local language if you want local reach.
  • Be patient. There is no switch; it can take weeks.

How to check a Threads profile's location

For many profiles Meta shows an "About this profile" panel (open the profile, tap the menu and look for "About this profile", or check the linked Instagram account's "About this account"). It can show when the account joined and, for some accounts, the country the account is based in. Not every account shows this information.

Using Threads while travelling

You can use your Threads account anywhere. Short trips are normal and rarely cause problems. If you travel often, keep two-factor authentication on, avoid logging in from many countries in a short time, and expect an occasional "confirm it's you" prompt when you log in from a new place.

Why people buy Threads accounts by country

If you run a brand page for Japan, a community in Taiwan or a campaign in the USA, an account that was created in that country starts with the right history: local IP at signup and local early activity. That is simpler than trying to move an existing account. That is the idea behind country IP Threads accounts, for example:

Managing Threads accounts across countries

If you handle accounts for international business, keep each account tied to one country:

  1. Use a separate browser profile or device per account.
  2. Use a consistent connection from the account's country.
  3. Write the bio and posts for that audience's language and time zone.
  4. Secure each account with its own password and two-factor authentication (see how to secure a Threads account).

FAQ

Does a VPN change my Threads country?

A VPN changes your IP, which is one signal among several. It does not instantly change the account's country, and frequent jumps between VPN locations can trigger security checks.

Can I see Threads audience by country?

Threads offers basic insights for your profile. Detailed country breakdowns are limited, so many creators judge their audience from replies, followers and the linked Instagram account's insights.

Is it allowed to have accounts in several countries?

Running several accounts is allowed on Meta platforms within their rules. Using them for spam, fake engagement or impersonation is not, whatever the country.
