How to verify an Instagram account with your phone

Instagram asks for phone or SMS verification at signup, after a login from a new device, and whenever it sees something unusual. This guide explains how to verify an Instagram account with a phone, how to turn on two-factor authentication, and what to do when the Instagram verification code is not received.

When does Instagram ask for phone verification?

  • At signup, if you register with a phone number or Instagram decides it needs extra confirmation.
  • On a new device or location ("We noticed an unusual login attempt").
  • After suspicious activity, such as many follows, likes or messages in a short time.
  • When you turn on two-factor authentication with SMS.
  • When you change the phone or email on the account.

Accounts that were phone verified at creation are called PVA accounts; they usually see fewer of these prompts, though no account is exempt.

How to verify an Instagram account with a phone number

  1. Open Instagram, go to your profile and tap the menu (☰).
  2. Open Accounts Center > Personal details > Contact info.
  3. Tap Add new contact > Add mobile number.
  4. Select the account(s), choose the country code and enter the number.
  5. Enter the 6-digit code Instagram sends by SMS. The number is now confirmed.

How to turn on two-factor authentication

  1. Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication.
  2. Choose the account.
  3. Pick a method: Authentication app (recommended), SMS or WhatsApp, or a security key.
  4. Follow the setup and save the backup codes somewhere offline.

An authenticator app protects you from SIM-swap attacks and works without signal, which is why it beats SMS for most people.

Instagram verification code not received: troubleshooting

  1. Wait 1–2 minutes before requesting a new code. Several requests in a row can put you in a temporary cooldown.
  2. Check the number. Correct country code, no leading 0 after the code.
  3. Look for alternative delivery. Instagram often offers WhatsApp, email or a call instead of SMS. Tap "Try another way" if you see it.
  4. Check SMS filters. Some phones and carriers hide messages from short codes; look in spam or "unknown senders".
  5. Disable VPN or switch networks (Wi-Fi ↔ mobile data). A flagged IP can block the flow.
  6. Update the app or try instagram.com in a browser.
  7. Wait 24 hours if you see "Please wait a few minutes before you try again".

"Instagram phone verification not working" and other problems

"This phone number is already in use"

The number is linked to another Instagram account. Remove it from that account first, or use a different number.

The code is rejected

Codes expire after a short time and only the newest one works. Request a new code and enter it right away.

Stuck in a verification loop

Log out, close the app, wait a while and log in again on the same device and network. If it keeps looping, use the browser version, and if that fails use the "Need more help?" option on the login screen.

No access to the old number

Use email verification if available, or a backup code. If neither works, follow the recovery steps in our guide on how to secure and recover an Instagram account.

Instagram account verification requirements (the blue badge is different)

People often mix up phone verification with the blue checkmark. Phone verification confirms you control a number. The badge comes from Meta Verified (a paid subscription with ID checks) or Instagram's notability review for public figures. Nobody can sell you a legitimate blue badge; treat such offers as scams.

Instagram account login verification after buying an account

If you buy an Instagram PVA account, expect a verification prompt on the first login from your device. That is normal. Complete it, then:

  • change the password,
  • replace the email and phone in Accounts Center with your own,
  • turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app,
  • keep one device and connection per account at first, and warm up gradually.

Our Instagram PVA accounts (100 pack) and Instagram accounts by country are phone verified at signup and delivered to Telegram. If an account can't be logged in at all on first use, contact support with your order ID as described in our refund policy.

Quick checklist

  1. Accounts Center > Personal details > Contact info: add and confirm your phone.
  2. Password and security > Two-factor authentication: authenticator app + backup codes.
  3. Code missing? Wait, check format, try WhatsApp/email/call, switch network.
  4. Never share codes with anyone, including "support" in DMs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a phone number to Instagram?

Accounts Center > Personal details > Contact info > Add new contact > Add mobile number, then enter the SMS code.

Why am I not getting the Instagram code?

Wait before re-requesting, check the number format, try WhatsApp, email or call, check SMS filters, and switch networks or turn off VPN.

Is phone verification the same as the blue badge?

No. The blue badge comes from Meta Verified or a notability review; phone verification only confirms you control a number.
