How to phone verify a Gmail account

Adding a phone number to a Gmail account is one of the most useful things you can do for it. It lets Google send you sign-in codes, helps you recover the account if you forget the password, and makes sign-in from a new device go more smoothly. This guide shows how to phone verify a Gmail account on a computer, on Android and on iPhone, and what to do when the code does not arrive.

What "phone verified" means for Gmail

A Google account can use a phone number in three ways:

  • Recovery phone: Google texts you a code if you are locked out or if it sees unusual activity.
  • 2-Step Verification phone: Google sends a code (or a prompt) every time you sign in on a new device.
  • Contact phone: shown under Personal info and optionally used for other Google services.

In every case Google sends a one-time code to the number and you type it in. Once the code is accepted, the number is verified. Accounts that were verified this way at signup are what sellers call PVA accounts.

Before you start

  • Use a number you own and will keep. A recovery number you lose access to is worse than none.
  • Make sure the phone can receive SMS (some prepaid or VoIP numbers cannot receive Google codes).
  • Know your current Gmail password; Google will ask for it.

How to phone verify a Gmail account on a computer

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
  2. Open the Security tab (on some layouts it is called "Security & sign-in").
  3. Under "How you sign in to Google", click Recovery phone.
  4. Enter your password again if asked.
  5. Click Add recovery phone, choose your country code and enter the number.
  6. Click Get code. Google sends a 6-digit code by SMS.
  7. Type the code and click Verify. The number now shows as your recovery phone.

How to verify a Gmail account with a phone on Android

  1. Open Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account.
  2. Tap Security (scroll the tabs at the top if you don't see it).
  3. Tap Recovery phone, confirm your password, then add the number.
  4. Enter the code that arrives by SMS. On many Android phones the code is filled in automatically.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture and choose Manage your Google Account.
  2. Go to Security > Recovery phone.
  3. Add the number and type the code from the SMS.

Turn on 2-Step Verification (recommended)

A recovery phone helps you get back in. 2-Step Verification stops other people getting in. To enable it:

  1. In Security, click 2-Step Verification and then Get started.
  2. Confirm the phone number Google should use and choose text message or call.
  3. Enter the code to confirm, then turn it on.
  4. Add a backup method: Google prompts on your phone, an authenticator app, or printable backup codes. An authenticator app is safer than SMS alone.

The verification code did not arrive: what to try

  • Wait a minute and request once more. Requesting many codes in a row can trigger a temporary block.
  • Check the country code and number format. Enter the number without the leading 0 when you pick the country code.
  • Try "Call" instead of "Text". Some carriers delay short-code SMS.
  • Check signal and SMS spam filters. Some phones file codes in a blocked or spam folder.
  • Use another number. Google limits how many accounts one number can verify. If you see "This phone number has been used too many times", you need a different number.
  • Wait 24 hours. If Google says you have tried too many times, waiting is the only fix.

Common questions

Can I create a Gmail account without a phone number?

Sometimes. Google decides per signup whether to ask for a phone, based on device, IP and other signals. When the phone step is skipped the account is not phone verified, and Google may ask for a phone later, often at an inconvenient moment. See PVA vs non-PVA accounts for why this matters.

Can one phone number verify several Gmail accounts?

Yes, but only a small number. Google does not publish the limit and it varies, which is why people who manage many accounts use separate numbers or buy PVA Gmail accounts that are already phone verified.

Is it safe to remove the phone number later?

You can remove it under Security, but the account becomes harder to recover. If you change numbers, add the new one first, verify it, and only then delete the old one.

I bought a phone verified Gmail account. Should I add my own number?

Yes. After login, change the password, add your own recovery phone and recovery email using the steps above, and turn on 2-Step Verification. That puts recovery in your hands. Our guide on logging in to bought accounts safely explains how to avoid triggering security checks while you do this.

Quick checklist

  1. myaccount.google.com > Security > Recovery phone > add number > enter code.
  2. Add a recovery email too.
  3. Turn on 2-Step Verification with an authenticator app as backup.
  4. Save backup codes somewhere offline.
  5. Review "Your devices" and sign out of anything you don't recognise.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I add a phone number to Gmail?

myaccount.google.com > Security > Recovery phone, or Personal info > Contact info > Phone.

Why is my Gmail verification code not arriving?

Check the country code, wait before re-requesting, try a voice call, check SMS spam filters, or use a different number if Google says it has been used too many times.

Is 2-Step Verification the same as a recovery phone?

No. A recovery phone helps you get back in; 2-Step Verification asks for a second factor every time you sign in on a new device.
